My Students

"What really knocks me out is a book, when you're all done reading it, you wished the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it." Holden Caufield, the narrator of J.D.Salinger's famous coming of age novel, The Cather in the Rye, says these words when discussing books he's read for his English class. These words could easily have come from the mouths of previous students who have enjoyed reading this novel.

Of all the books I've taught, I have to say The Catcher in the Rye, hands down, is my students' favorite.

They love Holden's sarcasm, wit, and experiences. Despite the differences between Holden and my students (my students are mostly African-American and Hispanic and 95 percent of them qualify for the free-reduced lunch program), they can identify with Holden's anguish at being a teenager in an unpredictable world.

My Project

For this proposal, I am requesting copies of The Catcher in the Rye to read with my 11th grade students this spring. As one of the classics in American literature, reading this book will help prepare my students for college-level analysis. It will also provide them with needed cultural capital. As we read the book, students will participate in Socratic seminars, lead and create presentations on the novel's key symbols, and will complete a psychological evaluation of Holden.

Although my students may not be able to "call up" Salinger when finished reading the book, they will be able to discuss and share their thoughts and opinions on Holden's adventures.

With your support, my students will be able to experience an important piece of American literature.
