As a teacher in Philadelphia, our students are bombarded with negative messages, losing hope, and overall just stressed. We expect these students to then come to school ready to learn when the world around them is crashing down. I believe that a calming corner would be a place for students to recuperate.
I would like my students to not feel so overwhelmed when coming to school.
The products I have selected reinforce the positive messages, give them a place to relax when stressed, and allow them to be expressive.
The bean bags and rug will be used for comfortable seating. Traditional classroom desks can cause students to feel locked in and lose interest. This will help students to feel more at ease, especially when reading our class assigned books.
The mini-fridge would provide cold beverages for students. Students tend to leave class just for water, but having water in the classroom would allow students to not miss anything in the lecture.
The inspirational pillow cover will remind students how important they are in this world and to also validate their feelings. Just because they are young doesn't mean they shouldn't be heard.
The fidgets will be tools for students to stay focused when reading, doing assignments, or during lectures.
Our students have different specialized education needs. Our students cannot thrive unless we change our teaching techniques to fit their personalized needs. It is imperative, for me, as an English teacher to make sure my students aren't frustrated when reading.
