My Project
The school I work at is in a low income area. We have a very high rate of mental health needs with a wide range of abilities and disabilities. In my kindergarten class, students are still learning how to regulate their bodies while still continuing to learn. My students come from varying backgrounds which can make it hard to come to school with a positive mindset. Over the last few years, I have seen the mental health needs in my school grow and I want my students to feel safe and welcomed in my class to help them stay on task.
My goal is to create a calming environment in the classroom with warm and calming colors, along with sensory items to help with sensory needs.
I am trying to set up more "calm down" spaces in my room where students can take small breaks to help regulate their bodies and get them back to learning. In these areas I would include timers, sensory items, and a safe place away from the other students. I would also like to provide them more flexible seating options for their learning. With such a variety of needs, not all students benefit from sitting at a desk and chair all day. I would like to provide them opportunities to sit in different areas of the room with different types of seating.
I appreciate any help you are able to give our kindergarten classroom! My students are so sweet and so deserving of a good education. I cannot help things that are out of my control outside of the classroom, but I would like to help them be the best they can be INSIDE the classroom. Thank you again for your support!
