My Students

We are fortunate to live in a time when information is at our fingertips. While learning California history, we are requesting an Apple iPod to rotate the job of Historian/ Researcher to confirm our learning. In addition, having individual copies of "Esperanza Rising" will personalize California history.

My students are curious and thoughtful.

Our school is constantly looking for best practices to help learning be interactive and personal. We are fortunate enough to have strong community involvement that encourages students in the importance of involvement. They want to be aware of the world around them and know that history is an important factor in determining the "state" of our state. Esperanza Rising is about a Mexican girl who has to leave everything; status, prestige, wealth and migrate to California with her mother and grandmother. They will find life as migrant farmers and learn how to stand up for themselves. Students learn about the sacrifices and struggles many Californians have faced to survive and help create our diverse successful state. We can compare this story to others.

My Project

The students love to help and being able to access information through the iPod Touch to share with the class will empower them. Knowing that the job of daily historian will be rotated will motivate them while encouraging them to rely on each other for information. Each student will have the opportunity to assist and aid in classroom instruction. Technology is key to encouraging independence and increasing individual responsibility. Reading together has become a great unifying activity in our class. When we each read the same book, we feel a connection that encourages discussion and participation. Students learn important strategies and habits in preparation for higher learning. We are requesting individual copies of Esperanza so students can have their own to read, make notes, and comment as they read. The printing supplies we are requesting will help us print our projects and share them with each other.

The ipod touch we are requesting will help our daily historian research questions we may have while we are reading about California history, specifically as it relates to Esperanza Rising.

Each group of immigrants helped create our state, whether they came for the gold rush, railroad, movie industry, or farming. Each group has made a great contribution to our state and we are interested in learning about each. This project will bring the experiences to life.
