My Students

Have you ever seen a musician sitting on what looks like a box, and making wonderful percussion sounds by playing it? Ever wondered what that box was called? It's a cajon, and it originated in Peru!

I am an elementary music teacher for approximately 515 students in grades k-5.

We are a Title 1 school, with approximately 10% of our students being homeless and approximately 46% qualifying for free or reduced price lunch. Some of my students live in old motel rooms with their families. Needless to say, for many of my students, their only exposure to making music with REAL instruments comes in their weekly general music class. There is hardly any furniture in the music room, other than my desk and a couple of chairs, because the music room is a very active place, and furniture would just get in the way of moving and making music. Thanks to a number of wonderful Donors Choose projects, we have beautiful drums, guitars, rhythm instruments and even steel drums in the music room. Every instrument is high quality, so that my students are able hear what beautiful music sounds like.

My Project

With my fifth grade general music students, I always ask them at the very beginning of school if either they or their parents were born in another country. Those countries determine our course of musical study for the year. I already know that the mother of one of my students this year was born in Peru, and so I started to research Peruvian music this past summer, in order to have a unit of study planned for the fall. I had seen musicians on television playing the cajon, but had no idea that it was a traditional Peruvian instrument until I started my research. I will be researching Peruvian music, both traditional and contemporary, to find pieces that will be of high interest to these fifth grade students. Hopefully, I will find something to combine playing the cajons with other instruments, to accompany singing and/or dancing! The specific cajons requested in this grant can have the snares adjusted so that they will have the traditional Peruvian sound.

Next spring, my fifth grade general music students will perform A Celebration of World Music for their families and for our student body and staff.

This performance will include music played on xylophones, drums, steel drums, and guitars, as well as songs and dances. I know how excited I am about introducing this cool new instrument to my students this fall, and can only imagine how excited they will be to learn how to play them! Only Donors Choose donors make this possible. Thank you!
