Help me give my students vocational education, functional language, and service opportunities by creating a real working school cafe with a coffee pot and urn, dishwashing bin, drying rack, cups, serving utensils, and napkin holders.

My Students
Many of my students are on the autism spectrum, some stutter, others have mild to moderate cognitive challenges, but all have some form of language-based disability. It can be tough for them to navigate their education. They need special strategies and resources including communication books and pages to help them get their ideas across to others.
My students are bright, funny, sweet, technology-loving children.
They need extra help to develop their language, social interaction, and life skills. My goal is to target authentic language and give them strategies so they can work around their disabilities – for learning and for happy, successful lives.
My Project
We always have an eye on transitioning our students to life after school. I want them to be as independent as possible. How do you prepare special needs kids for getting a job and paying bills? Well, we practice. We create opportunities and real-life experiences for students to learn skills and apply functional language. It can be tough. We need to create safe spaces for them to practice so they can make mistakes with support. That's where you come in. We want to create a functional cafe for students to serve staff and teachers.
Our school cafe will model real-world skills.
Students will apply for jobs, get training, learn to serve, and get support for teachers. We're so excited to give students an in-school job as part of our bigger curriculum. For some of our kids, going out-to-work is too big of a jump. This model cafe will be the perfect stepping stone to practice foundational skills.
We love this idea. Students will have fun providing a real service to others, practicing their language skills, and learning – outside of worksheets and books. This is the kind of learning that sticks! We hope you'll consider helping my special needs students to open their own cafe. Thank you for your consideration.
