The Breadwinner: Reading to Learn About Afghanistan

My students need 30 copies of "The Breadwinner" and 5 copies each of "Mud City" and "Parvana's Journey".

My Students

My students don't get to see much of the world or interact with other cultures, but through reading the whole world is open to them. Won't you help to open that window?

We are a very small district.

Our entire sixth grade through twelfth grade is housed in one building. My students no longer have the luxury of small class sizes. Many of our materials are out of date and there is not the money to update what we have. Updating print materials has not happened in quite a long time, and there is no financial relief in sight.

My Project

I teach about the Eastern Hemisphere in my geography class. I continually try to help my students to understand the world in which they live. In the past I have read the Breadwinner aloud to my class during our study of the middle East. They absolutely loved it. They begged me to loan my copy to them so they could read it themselves. I would like to put a copy of this fabulous book in the hands of every student. Additionally, I am requesting 5 copies of each of the two sequels to loan to students who would like to read further about Parvana and the unrest in Afghanistan.

I want to give my students an understanding of the world beyond our small town.

I want them to appreciate what we take for granted. I want them to be inspired to make a positive impact on the world. Your donation to this project will play a part in making all of the above possible for my students.
