Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach 1st grade at a Title I school in Utah. My students are at a crucial age where they are developing foundational skills to learn how to read, as well as mastery of sight words, and bridging those skills and word recognition into fluently reading passages and stories for the first time. This is an important time for my students because I want them to have excitement about reading, and look forward to seeing and decoding words in books they are interested in. That is where this project comes into play.
My project is seeking a variety of books, as well as a book shelf for students to access books they are interested in throughout the school day!
Some of the books my project is requesting are "If you Give a Moose a Muffin" "Rainbow Fish" "The Mitten" "Silly Sally Went to Town" "The Giving Tree" and "Today is Monday." A lot of these books are fiction stories that allow students to build interest in the characters, and the plot throughout the story. I am also requesting the little dots of emotions books to help build our SEL lessons. Students are working on identifying their emotions, and what to do when they feel certain emotions. There is also a box set of plushies to help students identify the characters by holding them and locating them in stories. I also am requesting the shapes books trilogy, which talk about the various shapes in a fiction plot, but also allow students to learn the names of shapes and what they look like. The last item on my project is for a bookshelf that we will use to store our books. I want students to access the books throughout the school day and read every chance they can!
