My Students

We've been remote teaching for six weeks now. Each day, I am amazed by their self-discipline and drive to learn new things and their care for me and for each other. It has taken a while to get in the swing of things, but I'm so impressed with how far they have come.

Next week, we are starting a hybrid schedule, which will bring new challenges and adjustments, but I know they can do it.

I've seen their insights into our current book, and I would love to elevate their perspectives during these tumultuous times.

My Project

I would like to study social justice and equality with my 8th graders this year. The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas, is an excellent YA novel published in 2017 about a young black girl in New York City whose close friend is killed by police. It has won multiple awards and had an impact on me as an adult.

I can only imagine the positive impact it would have on middle school students.

We will be reading articles, completing projects, and meeting in small groups to discuss these big ideas as we read the story.
