My Students

My students come from the under-served, working-class neighborhood of our state. This is a Title I School and its mission is to offer a quality, rigorous, and relevant educational program leading to college graduation and empowering under-served urban students to become productive, fit, principled citizens in a changing society.

My students are enthusiastic learners with inquisitive minds who come to the library media center for books to give them a glimpse into the world.

I am the library media specialist at a 5th-12th grade school where most students do not have access to technology or books at home. Our school library media center serves as an access point to provide technology and literary materials they otherwise would not have.

My Project

I am requesting this collection of mostly historical nonfiction books to boost my students' literacy skills and to expose them to essential information and diverse viewpoints about our world. These nonfiction books were selected with my high school students in mind. The list is comprised of a variety of informational texts and biographies written to appeal to them. Placing these books in the library media center will allow the entire high school to access them.

These engaging and diverse books will serve as a catalyst for my students to continue to build their reading comprehension and writing skills.

One of my goals as a library media specialist is to create enthusiastic readers which in turn will lead to their academic success. According to a prominent school library trade journal, these are the best nonfiction books of the year. Please help expand the nonfiction section of our library media center with these books!
