This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Miss... I didn't know that this was a book first. I can not tell you how often I hear this from the students at EBC High School in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn, New York.
In today's world educators are constantly competing with the bells and whistles of computers, ipods, cell phones, television, and the movies. How can books compete with that pressure? One way I have discovered is to introduce students to the books that have been turned into movies.
This gives the students an opportunity to jump into a book they may have been reluctant to try because of difficult vocabulary or complicated themes. Many times students are shocked to discover that the directors perspective of a movie is not similar to their own. They come into the library wanting to discuss the elements that they believe were essential to the story but removed form the film. One of my favorite lines a student can say to me is "The movies is all wrong." and then go into a rant comparing and contrasting book to movie. I believe this gives me such pleasure because the students themselves do not realize the complex thinking they are engaging in when compiling their argument. If funded this project will open up students to a variety of movies and books that can open up such discussions.
