This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I have written too many projects like this one. My school is in a healthy food desert and many of my students don't have enough food at home so they prefer to come to school even when sick so they can get a free meal. Because I know they have food insecurities at home, I like to keep a stocked bodega for them to be able to grab something to take home. I received funding for a project like this twice this year but I need to restock again.
My students rely on being able to stop by for food to take home but when my cupboard is bare, I have to turn them away.
Having ready-to-eat meals and healthy and filling snacks that they can grab when they're staying after school or when they head home for the weekend is a necessity. When students are hungry, they can't focus and do well in school. Providing them with simple food items like rice, ready-to-eat meals, and other pantry staples can help get them through their hunger so that they can work towards college and career readiness as they leave our school.
