Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are under a lot of pressure. Pressure to do well on standardized state tests; pressure to take on adult responsibilities at home; and pressure to be tougher than they are. My students need opportunities to be social in a setting that is safe, friendly, and nurturing.

My students are eager and excitable.

With their eagerness, they sometimes have difficulty expressing themselves in a manner that promotes social growth. Middle school can be a tense time; I would like my students to be comfortable and able to improve their communication and cognitive skills. Board games allow them opportunities to converse and interact with each other using a structured medium. My students come from low-income families in the East Harlem area. Our free and reduced lunch program is 100%. My students come with a lot of baggage, and many of them are facing experiences that go beyond their young age; this fact, keeps many of my students from finding time to be children and engage in the social aspects of play.

My Project

My students will be using these board games including UNO, Guess Who, Operations, and Apples to Apples during lunch to help socialize and interact with their peers in a fun environment. They will be able to learn how to speak appropriately with peers, engage in friendly competition, turn taking skills, improve academics and improve their self esteem. It will also provide students with new opportunities to make new friends and express themselves. Along with increasing and strengthening students' social development and positive behavior. This project will also provide more structured opportunity to gain more proficiency in literacy, mathematics and scientific thinking.

The "Board Room" is designed to help my students improve their communication skills and improve their self esteem.

These students will learn important communication skills. They will improve metacognition. When students have good metacognition, their critical thinking skills are better. They can detect patterns easier, plan ahead more completely, predict outcomes of alternative moves, and learn from their mistakes all while developing their social skills.
