This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 8th grade students do quite well when it comes to English Language Arts and that's exactly what I teach. However, they lag significantly when it comes to math. We as a school put all of our resources into teaching Language Arts, but fall short when it comes to math instruction. I want to do something about it and help out in one small way.
Because many of our students are English Language Learners, they also are highly visual. One of our major challenges is that we lack the visual resources and supplies that can help bridge the gap between verbal-oriented classes and task-oriented classes.
Blokus is a game that can be played by children as young as five years of age. Suitable for people of all ages, Blokus is a game of logic and strategy. It promotes cooperative learning skills and enhances visual and spatial skills. Beyond enhancing mathematical and social skills, Blokus will be used as a hook to foster stronger parental support as family tournaments will be held each month in the classroom with prizes awarded to winners.
Your help will ensure that my students see real life applications to math-based skills while simultaneously fostering stronger family relationships and school/home partnerships. So much can be accomplished while playing a game. Think about the possibilities and the difference one game can make!
