My Project
As we bring AP African American Studies to the campus we want to make sure that students have the resources available to do research. Each of the books listed on this project gives students the opportunity to learn African American history from leading scholars in the field. Part of the AP course is students completing an independent research project over any topic that sparks their interests in African American Studies. By creating this library, especially the Africana Encyclopedia series, we are giving them ample credible and relevant resources to complete their individual project.
Students will use these resources to create an interactive Black History Museum in February that the entire campus community is invited to.
Students act as docents for their individual projects explaining the historical context of their topic. This is our way of teaching our campus about the varied history of the African American experience.
At the end of the year students will also be tasked with completing an oral defense of their project. Students must make a claim about the historical moment that they selected.
Our classroom library will ensure that students have collegiate-level sources to begin building their historical knowledge. They will also have the opportunity to see just how other historians have curated their own narratives about the history of African Americans.
