My students need mouthpieces and reeds to use the school loaned instruments and practice pads to limit noise level while practicing individually.

My Students
Each day has its challenges to overcome. Some students have a good musical foundation while others are brand new to the program. But greatness will be restored. This being my first year at the school, I set the tone every practice by saying "Be strong...." and the students say "...and do it!"
My students are very interesting.
A broad spectrum of learners. My students are inner city children who come from broken and stable homes. Some become products of the environment while others allow for positive impression. They all want to belong to something special and be recognized for their commitment and accomplishments for doing positive things in the community and the city. They hate to be stereotyped but sometimes have to be reminded not to stereotype themselves. My school is interesting, too. At one time, before I was full-time at the school, business was booming. The fine arts department, football and basketball team, and magnet program were second to none in the city. Many would say it has become a shell of its former self. But many of those who would say that don't know the factors involved that made the state of the school different. But now it's time to change all that by starting with changing the conditions and circumstances we can impact... for our children.
My Project
Every mouthpiece will be used in an instrument most likely supplied by the school. This will enable each child to actively participate in class and enable some to play for marching band after school. All too often has a child come with interest but leave never to return because they could not afford the proper supplies. They will learn how to play music at a high level in concert band and marching band. The stronger they become in those groups enables us to branch out to jazz band and small ensemble groups. The percussion players will be able to practice and develop their skill in the classroom without disturbance by using the practice pads. It will also preserve the actual drums themselves for performance time usage.
This project will bring this band program one step closer to the positive learning experience it is designed to be.
Our students should get the same opportunities of learning and exposure, regardless of income. And by excelling musically in high school, they increase their chances of receiving music scholarships to college. I can only imagine great things for the community as our students rise above the influence of poverty and restore it to prosperity.
