This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come from one of the most economically distressed parts of our city. Everyday, they overcome challenges in their community, families, and their individual lives. These challenges include single parent (or even "zero" parent) homes, violence, poverty, and discrimination.

Despite the fact that they face many obstacles, they are determined to get the education that will lift them out of poverty and set them on the path to new horizons.

They need to have a rich background of literacy and critical thinking to successfully complete their journey.

My Project

Our students need to develop critical reading skills. They need to be able to read a text for understanding and enjoyment. The Bible is the foundation for a great deal of literature that my students will encounter in college and life.

I will be able to teach a course entitled "The Bible as Literature" this next school year.

This will NOT be a religious class. This will be a reading class that uses the Bible as its main text along with a study aid to help their understanding.

Too many of our students are illiterate about the Bible, and because of this, many times a story, poem or play makes reference to something from the Bible, they simply do not get the allusion. When Martin Luther King refers to the story of Moses during the Exodus, they do not understand why.

This course is designed to make the Bible a part of their cultural literacy and to improve the students' reading skills.
