As a teacher in a rural town supported by a state university, I see a diverse blend of students. Some are native to our state, while others, visiting from halfway around the world, are enrolled with us while their parents work as visiting scholars. Many languages and cultures are represented in my middle school of almost 900 students.
Reading and literacy skills bind us together.
Together, we read popular young adult books and classic literature. We write about our experiences and our reactions to what we read. It is through these interactions that we learn that, maybe, we are not so different after all.
My Project
When you think of a reading classroom, you probably picture students sitting quietly and reading books to themselves. While this is one aspect of a reading classroom, audio also plays a big part. When students struggle with fluency, pronunciation, or keeping active interest, audio books and activities can give them the support to keep reading.
My students currently utilize audio reading stations at least once a week, and they need high-quality headphones to make it easier to hear appropriately.
Our current headphones are on their last days, and many students cannot bring their own earbuds to use in class. This project would supply our classroom with 13 pairs of wired headphones that are compatible with our existing classroom equipment.
More than half of students from low‑income households
