Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Every morning, 25 third graders bounce into our classroom. They have 20 minutes to go to their lockers, eat breakfast if they choose, and complete their morning work before our busy day begins. This may seem like an insignificant part of the day, but that is far from true. During those 20 minutes, so much is happening aside from taking attendance and getting the lunch count to the cafeteria. This is an opportunity for me to assess my students needs outside of academics. Who is hungry? Who is tired? Who has worn the same outfit 3 days in a row? Who is sad? Who is happy? Who is excited because their team won the big game the night before? Who is stressed because they left their lunchbox on the bus? What does each student need from me today? The materials I am asking for will be used by students as their morning work. Instead of busy work, I want to provide my students with activities for them to enjoy while I make sure our days start on the right note.

Kids learn while they're playing.

They learn how to communicate and problem solve. They learn how to be creative and explore new ideas. They learn how to succeed and what to do when they fail. My goal is to use these materials to create stem boxes that will rotate through my different groups. Each group will get a different material to play with each morning with their other group members. They will think it's just a time to play, but really it will be a way for them to practice all the skills I previously listed. The students get to start with some fun with their friends not even realizing that they're actually learning!
