Teacher Professional Development: I need to know how to meet my students' needs as English Language Learners. To do this I need online professional development on best practices for ELLs. <profdevpilot>
"Get over the idea that only children should spend their time in study. Be a student so long as you still have something to learn, and this will mean all your life."
Henry Doherty (1870-1939)
I have been teaching in my NYC neighborhood for 20 years.
I have a degree in Early Childhood Education with graduate work in Literacy and Special Education. I have benefited greatly from these educational experiences and they have helped me and my students to be successful.
The needs of my children have changed in the past 20 years. Many are new to this country and are English Language Learners. This year I have a very diverse, energetic class of 24 wonderful children. They come from all over the world and have the opportunity to not only learn our curriculum but to learn about others and how to respect each other.
We do everything together as a community of learners with love in our hearts. As we are so different we have different learning needs. As their teacher, it is my responsibility to make sure I understand what is needed for each child to be successful and provide it during the day.
My Project
I am requesting that I have the opportunity to attend professional development so that I can better meet their needs as English Language Learners. It is my goal to become more knowledgeable in how I can create an environment and lessons that provide a dynamic and language rich experiences for my children.
Thirteen of my students speak a language other than English once their school day ends.
Six of my students go home & speak Spanish with their families. The remaining seven speak different languages and dialects from Africa. While it is a challenge, the diversity and rich culture that is brought into the classroom is a gift.
My goal is for all of my students to be successful readers and writers. They have to work a little harder to get there and I want to be able to do everything possible to support them.
