The Best Readers are Challenged Readers!

My students need leveled books that challenge them. They also need white board markers, and new mentor texts that I can use to teach them to be good writers.

My Students

Do you remember coming to a hard word in a book you read for the 1st time? Reading texts that are 1 or 2 levels up, challenge our students. And by challenging our students, they in turn become better readers. By replenishing their school supplies and reading new books, they'll be excited to learn!

Students at our school come from low-income families who face challenges of their own everyday.

Our school has become a 'safe haven' for the students who attend by teaching character education, a strong curriculum, and most importantly providing a welcoming and nurturing environment. Although our school is a Title I school and 95% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch, we are 80% proficient in reading and math. We are a School of Distinction, even though our resources are limited. I would like to provide my students with more leveled readers, so they are being challenged. I know my students will be very grateful for the new books and school supplies once we get them, as will I.

My Project

In first grade, I'm helping develop fluent readers. Students need to reach 5-6 reading levels in order to make their reading goals. In order to do this, first graders need to continue to read more challenging texts in order to be better readers. These leveled readers will be a great resource for them to have in our classroom library. Students will be able to pick out books that interest them and are challenging their reading skills. Our school is a year-round school so I'm also asking to replenish some of our everyday classroom supplies that are tattered and worn. The students need new nametags and nametag pockets for their desks. We also need new nametags for cubbies. We need more birthday crowns to have the students wear at school! We also need black and colored ink for the classroom printer, colored pens and felt-tip pens, binder clips, and packaging tape to mend torn books. And finally we need student white board markers, folders, and mentor texts to teach writing lessons.

This project is so very important to us because we need these resources to teach our curriculum.

With your help, my students will be able to read challenging books. They will also meet their individual reading goals because they will learn new vocabulary. I will be able to teach new writing lessons covering the parts of speech. Finally we will be able to replenish tattered and torn materials that we use every day. We appreciate your help and are excited to get these new resources.
