My Students
There are certain milestones that all children eagerly await in life. For example, learning to tie your shoes or riding your bike without the training wheels. Every year, students entering third grade are looking forward to a new milestone--learning their multiplication facts.
I help students succeed at reaching the multiplication milestone at a 3-5 school with approximately 800 students enrolled.
Our school population is 60% white, 37% black and 3% Hispanic, Asian, or other. In our school 40% of students are on free or reduced lunch. The average third grade class size is 20 students.
Our school believes in high expectations, as evidenced in the school motto of "Our best and nothing less!" Students in third grade are introduced to their multiplication facts and expected to master each fact family by recalling 100 individual facts in 5 minutes. By the end of third grade, students are not just supposed to be fluent in single digit multiplication but they also need to be solving two and three digit by a one digit multiplier problems.
Third grade students are very eager to meet this challenge; it is a right of passage from the primary grades to the upper elementary grades. This is an occasion where, even to them, it is cool to be smart.
My Project
I think it would be wonderful if students could practice their multiplication facts independently while also timing themselves so they are preparing for the school standard. Pairing the timers with multiplication flashcards would provide students with the opportunity to practice recalling facts and seeing how quickly it can be done. Students could practice independently in class when they are through with math course work or this would be a great resource to send home as homework so students have all the materials to practice at home. I am requesting one teacher timer, 24 student timers and 25 sets of math flashcards.
The ability to practice timed multiplication drills would affect my students' entire third grade math experience.
They will confidently master their multiplication and be more successful in math in future grades. Many math skills in third grade and beyond are dependent on the mastery of multiplication. Students having access to timers and flash cards would be extremely beneficial to them doing their best and nothing less!
