Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are visionaries, excited to take-on or push forward the next internet trend using what they have learned in school. In my class, I teach them to think big and always ask questions.
I teach English Language Arts and Reading at a Title I middle school in Miami, Florida.
54% of our school's students identify as Hispanic, and 45% identify as Black or African American. 97% of students at our school receive free or reduced-price lunch.
The challenges my students face at home without a doubt play a factor in their learning, but when we are in school I teach them to control what they can when they can.
The group's favorite quote from our first poem is "I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul" by William Ernest Henley.
My Project
We start writing every day in my class with our opening procedure. Students engage in reflection, review, and predictions as they respond to introductory questions on their own sheets of paper.
To provide consistency and alleviate the clutter in students bags, composition notebooks and pencils will give students the means to put their thoughts down and store their materials in my class.
Every day, they will grab their composition notebooks from the shelf and start their “Do Now” question.
We are working on argumentative writing, and many students have expressed difficulty in garnering their own notebooks I requested on the syllabus. Pencils are also an every day need. This project will tackle that insecurity and help foster a system of organization for my students.
