Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am an ESE (Special Education)/Reading teacher and the family liaison at a K-8 center in Miami. I teach and support students that have learning difficulties and/or disabilities in all subject areas and grade levels in our K-8 school. My school is a Title I school which means that about 99% of the students at my school receive free or reduced-price lunch due to their low socioeconomic status. The school is in a high poverty neighborhood so many of my students come from families who struggle financially. As a result, my students endure more problems than average children, and these problems interfere with and hinder their learning.
My Project
Many of my students are struggling readers but I have found a way to get them to love to read by finding high-interest age-appropriate novels. We have very limited resources and many of my high-interest novels are old from a donation when I first began teaching 11 years ago and the novels are withering away, held up by tape. I have many students that are going through many situations but love to read.
My students often ask me if I have any more new novels that they can read because they have read all of the ones that we have in our class library.
This is a good problem because at the beginning of the year I could not get them to read but now they are bragging to each other about what books they have read and demanding that I add more to our collections. My school media center is currently closed due to funding, therefore I would like to have high-interest books in my classroom that are at their fingertips and will continue to grow their passion for reading. The high-interest novels will make a huge difference in our diverse classroom. The students will be able to read in groups with a partner and discuss the matters that the books address ranging from diversity, bullying, equality, hardship, fairness and coping with being a teenager. Many of my students have a lack of resources and this addition to our class library will give them the opportunity to experience different many novels that will inspire them to move from struggling readers to proficient readers and lovers of writing.
