it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am a first year teacher who is thrilled to be serving her FAVORITE grade and the demographic/students of her dreams! My sweet 6th graders have been such a blessing to work with in the past few weeks.
After running a pre-diagnostic assessments, I was able to identify many needs that are unique to each student.
To ensure educational equity, I have been planning for instructional differentiations before our official unit launch for math/science while getting to know all my students in the midst of shuffling rosters, finding ways to effectively communicate, and building a connection despite the language barriers with my EL students. Although this is still a work in progress with trials and errors, my students and I have been bonding and establishing respect for each other, ensuring that I am there to help them and that my classroom is safe.
I am currently serving a total of 60+ students throughout each day--with at least 15% of my students who don't speak any English--in the subject content area of Honors science, two math classes, and two integrated science classes.
As our first unit launch in math is area and surface area (geometry), our goal is to use hands-on manipulative to fulfill differentiated instruction for the students who find math content challenging. Some of the other items listed will be used for our upcoming units. I am bringing in as many digital resources to meet the bilingual students' immediate needs alongside any of my students in learning through the rigorous middle school level content.
In addition, my classroom is still in need of some basic back-to-school supplies like a stapler, file folders, and a pencil sharpener! Honestly, I have been making some rookie mistakes, but I'd be encouraged to see that someone else cares for the students in my class!
