Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Remember the first time someone read a poem to you as a child? It is that moment of magic that I hope to capture--and repeat--throughout this unit on poetry for my third graders. The magic of poetry is one that is often overlooked in today's test-pressured classroom, but a well-known secret among many reading teachers is that poetry can do wonders for building children's fluency and interest in reading.

While working with several of the children that I will be teaching this year, I realized that they ALL--regardless of reading level or ability--loved poetry. Yet, when I entered the third grade classroom that I will be teaching in, I was disappointed to see that there were absolutely NO poetry books. This proposal will provide these rich resources to my students while also enriching their understanding of an often-neglected genre in today's classroom.

I will need multiple copies of poetry books written by some of the most talented children's poets of today. These poems will be read out loud in class, read with children with partners, and also will be taken home to read with parents. At the end of the unit, children will perform their favorite poems using props and their own created set designs. Children will bring these favorites to life and these favorites will be archived in the classroom library so that other children can continue to explore their peers' favorite pieces again and again. The Beauty of Poetry is part of Genre Study Project that I designed in my reading graduate class, and after researching the current research on fluency and reading achievement in the United States, I realized that this project was a fun, but effective way to create life-long learners and readers.

Your help will ensure that my students are exposed to the genre of poetry, help improve their fluency, but as I mentioned before, really help my students begin to walk the path as life-long readers. Thank you in advance for reading this and helping make my goal for my students possible!
