My Students
A typical day in my classroom can easily be described as students who are hungry to learn but do not have the tools to do so.
I have 55 8th grade literature students in an inner city school where we have 72% low income students.
They are great kids who want to learn but have a bad taste in their mouths due to past school experiences. With this project, I plan to breathe life back into reading for the students and give them freedom to choose what they read.
My Project
The students are in desperate need of choice when it comes to reading in our literature class. Our school has limited funds so the budget for buying books for literature circles is low. The students will be conducting discussions within small groups and taking their education into their own hands. They will learn how to collaborate within small groups settings and give themselves goals to meet as they read, being they will have to decide amongst their group how many pages will have to be read a night.
This project will change my students' lives for the better because it will give them a chance to take their learning in their own hands and do something with it.
So often these students are just told to read this or write that but there would be such a greater impact on student education with the ability to choose the avenue in which you will learn.
