My Students

I have been teaching secondary school student a wide array of computer applications and technology nineteen years in Los Angeles. My undergraduate education is in life science, with Masters Degrees in Educational Technology and School Leadership.

Today, every career field is influenced by technology and understanding computer science has become an increasingly important foundational skill for every student.

Being college and career ready today means that every student has a basic understanding of computer science principles, just like life science and physical science.

My classroom represents the statistical twenty-five percent that brings computer science to a socioeconomically disadvantaged urban school. In our huge urban district, the percentage is far, far less. Equity and #CSforAll is our credo and we're all dedicated to sharing our knowledge. The students pictured are part of my team of co-facilitators . Together we've brought the foundational principals of computer science education to elementary school teachers at multiple workshops in the Los Angeles area.

My Project

"The Beauty and Joy of Computing" is an introductory computer science curriculum developed at the University of California, Berkeley, intended for non-CS majors at the high school junior through undergraduate freshman level. It was one of the five initial pilot programs for the AP CS Principles course being developed by the College Board and the National Science Foundation. The most popular class at Harvard University today is Intro to Computer Programming because computers are helping in almost every other field of study.

Computing has changed my students' world in profound ways.

It has opened up wonderful new ways for them to connect, design, research, play, create, and express themselves. The real transformative and empowering experience comes when they learn how to translate their ideas into code. Learning to code is useful no matter what their career ambitions are.

This is my first funding collaboration with Donors Choose and its community of givers. This year, I am funding my own professional development at MIT's App Inventer Summit and the ISTE Conference. This course will significantly extend what I can offer to my students and school community. I am confident that with these new skills, my students will be better prepared for creating their future and creating beauty and joy within their own community.
