This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Run, Forest, run!" Forest Gump loved running. Most of my students do not. I'd like them to learn the science and health factors behind the cardiovascular activities we require. Heart rate monitors will help them see, achieve and track their running times in a positive and hands-on manner.
My 4th and 5th grade PE students are incredibly curious, active and enthusiastic.
I love teaching PE because the students see me waiting on the field for them and they run to PE. With the increased emphasis on "back to basics" and testing, students really need the opportunity to get out and run, play, breathe, kick balls, play tag, swing a bat, shout, and just run free. This is absolutely the beauty and essence of my job. I just need help with the tools to do it.
My Project
My students need 10 heart rate monitors to track their levels of cardiovascular fitness and training in physical education class. If you think back to your own PE class, you may remember either loving or hating the mile and other running activities. Some of my students love, love, love it. Others hate, hate, hate it. But I'm trying to teach all of them why it's important by teaching them the science behind it. The heart rate monitors will help students be able to gauge when they have elevated their heart rate and are actually achieving a level of cardiovascular fitness. This will particularly help the students who have difficulty running because the monitor will help them gauge the level of intensity they need to achieve to elevate their heart rate to the desired 65-85% of their maximum heart rate. Though I am only asking for ten heart rate monitors and I have many more students than that, I will assign them to ten students per week. I believe this will build interest and anticipation for the rest of the students as they wait their turn.
Obesity is so rampant these days and many programs are being developed to combat it's effects.
I believe utilizing existing physical education programs is a much more effective method to address this issue. I, personally see approximately 1,500 students at seven schools per week. With the right tools, I can reach many students with much needed health and fitness information. I can also teach these fitness concepts to students who don't normally have access to this information.
