My students worked collaboratively with a teaching artist on a Sandy Relief Initiative and learned the art of Batik. We created monumental tapestries comprised of individual panels. My students were so excited by this technique that they can't wait to make their own!
My students learn best when they are an active participant in the process of their work.
They work independently, but have the freedom to discuss and critique each other's work in our classroom setting.
I teach art in an urban high school where most students commute in from neighboring cities. Many of my students when they first come have limited exposure to artists, styles, art fundamentals, including techniques and media. When they come to class they are at different levels of knowledge and experience. I try to infuse in them a love of art through continuous reminders that art is indeed a form of communication and encourage them to develop their voices. They are extremely curious and motivated. When they feel successful in a completed work, they gain a tremendous amount of confidence and look forward and are eager to apply their skills in their next work. They spend a lot of time in my room before and after school. It's a place they have the freedom to truly express themselves.
My Project
The requested materials will be a wonderful resource for my students. It will provide them with the tools they need to create their own self portraits using the Batik process. My students will be able to explore their cultural history and share themselves through a tapestry. They will learn to create this project through an interdisciplinary experience incorporating math, history, art, science and language.
My students need to become more comfortable using a process rather than an immediate product. Having the chance to create their own Batik will help my students develop this quality of learning.
This donation will improve my classroom by giving my students the opportunity to develop a technique they otherwise would not have a chance to do.
Through this Batik project they will be able to apply their knowledge from other subjects in one interdisciplinary product. By learning this process and creating their work, students will understand the importance of individual subjects and their relevance to the world around them.
