Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have amazing 4th and 5th-grade students who are served through general education, EIP, and special education classes with a high population of students who speak English as a second language.

My students have a variety of gifts and challenges, each is unique in their own way.

They have made great strides in math and love to learn something new every day. We are an inner-city school located in a neighborhood. My students come from low-income homes with most of them receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Many of the parents of my students do not speak English at all and most of the learning that takes place happens in the classroom.

My Project

If student motivation and higher engagement is truly the desired end game, then we as teachers must adapt right along with our students in our classrooms. My hope is to create an environment where everyone is able to focus and learn in a way that is comfortable to them.

All of the items I am requesting will allow the students to engage in mathematics learning through the use of interactive math notebooks and hands-on dry-erase activities.

The students will use the glue sticks, colored pencils, pens, and pencils daily to create math notebooks that will help solidify the math concepts that we are learning. These notebooks become study tools that students can use over and over again as a reference too to gain proficiency. The dry erase markers and erasers will be added to our toolkits and used with the dry erase boards each student has to allow students to work out problems in different ways.

Most of my students come from low income and poverty situations. These basic supplies can tax the families beyond measure. More times than not I buy the supplies needed to create the notebooks out of my own pocket. This will provide me an opportunity to help all of the students I serve without hurting my own household.
