My Students
“Fill your paper with the breathings of your heart.” -– William Wadsworth
Each year our students discover that they can write a variety of pieces. They discover that they are authors. They have stories to share with the world.
Our school is located in a small rural community.
Most come from lower income families and have diverse backgrounds. Some students are learning English for the first time.
My classroom is full of 5 and 6 year old students who quickly pick up the needed skills to become an author of simple narrative stories, informative "how to" books and opinions in order to bring change to their world. When they leave my classroom, they continue their writing journey by learning from each of our dedicated teachers. This learning spirals into more complex writing which prepares them for what their future holds.
My Project
Three years ago, we began using Bare Books to allow each of our 385 students the opportunity to publish a hardback book. Using the Bare Books has become a tradition that our students and their families have thoroughly enjoyed. However, this year the amount of our Title I grant that provided the funding for these books was greatly reduced. That means the grant will not be able to provide the Bare Books for each student.
We want to carry on the tradition that was started three years ago. A tradition that each child, kindergarten through fifth grade, will be able to create their own published book.
By supporting this project, you will be helping our writers carry on the tradition of publishing a hardback book of their very own.
It is a way to celebrate their accomplishments as a writer. No matter the age, everyone has a story to tell. Help our school be able to tell 385 more stories.
