I am a counselor at a public high school in a rural town in Hawaii. My students come to school daily with smiles on their faces, laughter in their hearts, and a passion for learning. Life here is simple...or at least it should be.
Students must have their basic needs met before they are able to access their learning and reach their potential.
We have a high population of students whose families struggle to make ends meet. The pandemic hit our families hard and many have found it challenging to get back on their feet. Providing the basics is tough for some families.
My Project
Adolescence is a challenging time in anyone's life. Menstruation is a natural part of every girl's life and should not be a cause of stress, and possibly humiliation. Girls often lack the required feminine products, such as pads and tampons, to confidently attend school while on their period.
Imagine the stress of being an adolescent female and starting your period at school without having the necessary supplies.
Unfortunately, this is very common and happens on the daily. Sometimes girls just don't have the products on them, or they run out, or can't afford them, or are too afraid to ask their single father to buy them. Whatever the reason, situations like these are easily preventable. The Bare Necessities for Girls project can help eliminate these situations for our amazing high school students.
