Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Curiosity, enthusiasm (but not for homework as my students will readily tell you) and unbridled energy fill my inner city kindergarten classroom! We are always busy learning and exploring. The only thing missing is some of the most basic supplies needed to keep the spark alive.
My inner city classroom is composed of English and Spanish speaking students, most of whom have never been in school before.
Each and every one of them is excited about starting school and eager to learn. I am blessed to be part of a supportive school community that really strives to do the very best for the students, but is lacking in the financial resources needed to provide each student with all the tools necessary for success.
My Project
Early literacy is very important to me. I am blessed to have a large library of age appropriate books to share with my students, but am lacking in supplies needed for writing. Draw and write journals are perfect for emergent writers They allow them to communicate at their individual levels, whether it be drawing pictures, using letter like symbols, or writing actual letters or words. Every child can feel like a successful author with their own journal. The word spacers are a great tool for later in the year when the students will be writing sentences on their own. It reminds them to leave spaces between words in a fun and effective way. We will mostly be using the story board paper when we are writing reactions to read alouds. The children will be able to draw a picture related to a writing prompt and then write their response as well. Each of these products will help my students become strong writers.
This is my first year teaching Kindergarten after teaching Head Start for 18 years.
Most of the resources I brought with me are geared for younger students. These writing tools will go a long way in helping my students discover the joy in writing and in learning the proper mechanics involved in the writing process.
