This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students in undeserved communities usually look to sports as a way to escape the crime, poverty and hopelessness around them; theatre, music and art are seen as options only for those who can afford them. Giving opportunities for self expression through creativity, can alter the lives and perspectives of kids who have only seen their future through the eyes of fear, want and disappointment.

I know from personal experience how both the artistic and performing arts can infuse kids with confidence, joy and pride.

Discovering the ability to communicate with others, while sharing what is important to them can inspire a belief that anything is possible.

The students at my school long to be seen. When I shared with them my desire to create an arts program, they were both shocked and excited. I saw a light of hope in their eyes that hasn’t been there thus far. Please help me to begin something that will grow and make a difference for my students, Oakland, and perhaps the world! Thank you so much for your generosity.
