This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I serve Gifted and Talented students in a highly diverse, low-income district. The students come from many different backgrounds and a majority of our students speak a second language. Our students come from supportive families who want the best for their kids but often do not have the resources they need to assist them. These students are focused and excited to learn.
Gifted students are tomorrow's leaders, inventors, problem-solvers and creators!
Providing them with opportunities to think critically and collaborate is essential for their success while providing them more opportunities to be more college and career ready!
My Project
Our classroom is a MAKER classroom which means regardless of what class kids are in, they are inventing, designing, and making prototypes that solve problems or can be sold in our class store. Its really amazing to see what 11 year-olds can do when they are given the supplies, resources and opportunities to work on things they are passionate about! The two 3d printers and Resin printer will be used for 3d design. Students are constantly given 3d challenges to pass; however, we do not have enough 3d printers as our old ones are quickly falling apart. These same students love to design new products for our school store. Recently, they have been designing iPhone cord savers. The use of trial and error along with precise measurement skills are strengths they can take with them for the rest of their lives. I have requested 2 printers that auto calibrate so that they will handle the wear and tear of our preteens better than more technical models. The jewelry supplies are for our Resin/Economics class. These students survey their clients (fellow students) and design products according to the brand they have chosen to represent their companies. These additions will keep the resin store going another year. This same class utilizes Cricut design to make and sell ornaments for Christmas. These supplies will allow students to designing masks, t-shirts and ornaments for their student-led storefront. Our students LOVE coming to class and taking over the leadership and ownership of our store. It is the highlight of their day and for many, gives them a purpose to come to school.
