The Artistic Process From Sketch To Canvas - Autism Program
My students need art supplies, especially canvases, brushes and smocks, to create their own paintings to make a cross-grade level elementary school Autism friendly.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students with Autism frequently tell us things through their art that they are not able to find the words for. Art gives these students the chance to explore and express the world as they see it. Art also provides them a sensory escape.
My program is for students with high-functioning Autism.
We are located on a general education campus, and my students spend the majority of their time in mainstream classrooms. We are located in California, and our budget for art-related instruction has been drastically cut. We will be doing this project in collaboration with the 3rd to 5th grade Autism class.
My Project
These canvases will each be turned into a unique piece of student art. The students have been studying the masters' paintings and practicing techniques on paper. We have discussed and practiced horizon lines, textures, light and shadow, perspective, contrast and balance. Now it is time for them to create their own art.
Children with Autism see the world in a different way than neuro-typical people do, and often they have trouble explaining their views of the world.
Art offers my students an ability to express ideas and emotions that otherwise would stay bottled inside.
