Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Title I school in southern California. Most of my students come from low-income families, and many do not stay at the same school for more than a year. These students are shuffled from one school to the next, due to overflow and bus restrictions. This contributes to an unbalanced education. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about those circumstances.
However, I can give these young learners a thirst for knowledge and the ability to use logic and communication to find information for themselves.
This is the first year we are teaching at a distance. This is going to be equally challenging for teachers, parents, and students. Our students are in first grade and have not had experience with technology and need a tremendous amount of support. Thank you for your help in making this transition as smooth as possible.
My Project
Our school's focus strand is art and health. We do art three times each week to practice focus, following directions, and English language. In addition, students learn prepositions, academic vocabulary, practice fine motor skills, and boost confidence.
Art is a creative and therapeutic outlet for all students, especially those who are lacking in more academically demanding subjects.
Not all students are good at reading or math. Sometimes, they need another way to show their imaginations and talents. Art is a great way to do this. Every art project is associated with what we are learning in class - whether it's science, reading, or math. It is always surprising to see what kids are capable of and they often leave me in awe. These materials are not provided by the district and can be expensive for teachers to purchase on our own.
There is only so much we can do with construction paper and water colors. Oil pastels give us rich, vibrant colors. The varied colors and mediums inspire creativity and uniqueness. Students these days have very little art at home, if any. This may be the only place they get to be artistic.
