Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school has a long history of educating our neighborhood. Our students are a mix of African American, Hispanic as well as students who have come to us from all over the world including new arrivals just learning the language and customs. We are a small school in a lower income neighborhood but as a teacher I have always made an effort to provide new learning experiences for the students in my art classes.
Our students have limited exposure to cultural experiences and artistic forms of expression.
As an art teacher I believe my students deserve access to different cultures, ways of thinking and forms of expression. When my students create a work of art they are also aware of the people who work in the same way and the artist and cultures that inspire them. In this way their lives are enriched and they may go on to use those skills to enrich their neighbors and community.
My Project
As they grow up, my elementary school students will be exposed to mass media and mass culture. While they learn about Fine Art, they should also learn that most art that they are aware of is mass produced. And with today's technology, it is possible for an individual to mass produce their work. Technologies like home-printers scanners, and computers allow a single person or small group to do what, in the past could only be done by an industrial printer.
The "Zine" is an art for for creative self-publishing.
Essentially, it is short for "magazine" to denote that it is a printed publication but not as slick as a full magazine. This also means that it gives the artist/writer the ability to produce content that is both very personal and creative, while at the same time copying it cheaply, in enough numbers to reach a large number of people. Many of today's artists who work in publishing today began their careers publishing zines.
The printer and toner will be used to produce the zines. We will choose content, such as artwork and creative stories that are meaningful to the kids. They will choose the best content to scan using the all-in-one printer into computers. Using digital art and desktop publishing programs the students will lay out what the pages of the Zine will look like, preparing them for print. Finally we will use the printer to print out the zines in full color producing a number of copies of each for distribution and display in the School and Community. Thus we will be bringing together Art, Technology and language arts, while at the same time, learning skills that will benefit them their entire lives.
