The beauty of art combined with the joy of reading all wrapped up into one!!! Two of my students' favorite things!!!! Stories are art!
Our school is a small public school with students from many different countries around the world, with varied life experiences.
Being small is an advantage, in which all the students know each other well, work together and take care of each other. Parents help in the classroom and the community spirit flourishes. Students share books with one another and discuss what they read in literature circles. Some students have the means to have books at home and others go to the library to get their books. We are currently reading the same books together and studying so may features of text together. My students love to read and are making incredible connections to stories we have completed together with ones we are currently reading. We would love to receive a new hardback book, the largest hardback book all of these children will hold, written and beautifully illustrated by an award winning author whose writing style we have not enjoyed yet!
My Project
I am asking for multiple copies of two books that the students can read together in class in large groups and discuss together. I am also asking for the book on cd so that they can listen to it at times. These stories are highly engaging and filled with ideas to discuss. Both stories are beautifully illustrated. In "Wonderstruck", the illustrations are an entirely different story that connect to the written story near the end. This complex text study will be used to transfer ideas for their own writing. It also allows for research projects about Paris and people who are deaf. "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" will be the first mystery we read. The possibilities with both books are endless! It will also be the largest hardback book that these students will be able to take home and read filled with incredible drawings.
Students will create their own symmetrical stories based on the structure of "Wonderstruck."
Both books are medal winners and excellent examples of good literature.
My students will hold, read, and discuss two beautifully written and intricately drawn award winning literature.
They will share the books. Half of the class will read one and the other half of the class will read the other book! We will discuss, compare and contrast two very different stories written by the same author!
