The Art of the D.J. in a Music Classroom Setting

My students need to D.J with this DJ controller and accessories! Children today are ready to be challenged by technology- it's their language! This project will expand student's relationship to dance music!

My Students

Students in our society are bombarded with images that aren't necessarily all good and positive. By introducing the fun and educational aspects of DJ artistry, kids will gain a first hand look at the precision and knowledge that goes into having a happy, dancing crowd.

Our students are diverse, hungry for knowledge and full of creativity.

They come from a variety of different home situations and like any school, they want to be accepted and understood. This project will open the door for a deeper understanding of pop and dance music. As a 21st century music teacher, I aim to prepare life long learners. This project goes hand in hand with the music departments '12-'13 school year initiative to rebuild community.

My Project

This project idea will put students behind the turntable to "scratch" and "mix" two of their favorite tunes. This grant is for the ipad powered turntable (school has access to an Ipad), one instrumental cable and one mini condenser mic for recording these works. Can you imagine an educational setting where students will D.J. a "dance party" in the class? Through a process of discernment, the student will make musical selections of similar tempos and apply knowledge of meter and pulse to transition song one into song two. The true test of success is how easily the "dancers on the floor" are able to keep their moves without missing a beat! The best part about this project is that students won't know how much they're learning! In an authentic and fun way, kids will test their inner beat keeper and gain real DJ experience before they leave middle school!

This particular endeavor is a great way for students to really listen to the music they like and share the school appropriate pop music.

Students can choose from any repertoire that they enjoy, so each class will have a dedicated listening to over 60 songs by the end of each class project. As a movement exercise, a technology infusion and a way of gaining deeper tolerance and understanding of peers and the musical dance aesthetic, this project will hit the ground running!
