Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is a small, Title I-funded high school located in the Flatbush area of Brooklyn, NY. We are located in "Asthma Alley," and sandwiched between two major urban bridges - the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges.
All of my students are recent arrivals to the United States and English language learners.
They come from every part of the globe seeking a new life of opportunity and freedom here in the United States. They come with the hope that education will allow them to meet their full potential.
Many are on public assistance; many others are barely surviving. Yet, my students are expected to meet the same educational standards as more affluent students of New York.
My Project
Art and science are a natural pairing of disciplines. Both call upon a students' ability to make observations and create models and drawings to represent the world around them. My proposal is to provide students with art supplies that will enrich and enhance the learning process and improve retention of fundamental concepts. Using art adds a hands-on element to the learning process that ELLs find extremely useful.
Art is also a way for students to demonstrate what they have learned, and (more importantly) what they have not learned.
Armed with this knowledge, I can better service my students and help them understand science concepts in greater depth while providing them with another means of demonstrating their knowledge. Students will use the pencils, and craft materials to draw diagrams, and create posters that represent what they have learned in science. These art forms will provide my students with an additional means to communicate what they have learned and share their knowledge with others.
My goal is to help my students reach their full potential. Please help me help those most in need. Your act of kindness and generosity will have a long lasting impact on our students.
