This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every morning, my students begin reading class by saying, "Ready to read." I respond, "Ready to listen!" They answer, "Reading!" and I say, "Listening!" They are so excited to read aloud.
My English language learners have made much progress this year and are interested in reading about real life stories and getting to know the world they live in better.
They are curious and ask lots of questions. Recently we read the book Pompeii...Buried Alive! I overheard my students have a conversation on an escape route if they found themselves in Pompeii during the volcano eruption. For all of my students, English is their second language. They come from high poverty and have no books or learning materials at home.
My Project
My students need 50 nonfiction books at their reading levels. We will read each book. First, I will make a vocabulary presentation for each book to preview the challenging words. Next, we will read the book, and my students will respond to comprehension questions orally and in writing. I make worksheets based on the reading so I ensure their comprehension and provide them practice in expressing their ideas in writing. After reading each book, I will have my students to draw an illustration of the main idea or a part of the book that spoke to them and why. This added component of drawing will make possible "Empowering Students Through Art" to demonstrate an added comprehension and internalizing of the texts they read.
Acquiring this donation will make a big difference in enabling my students to continue to progress and make strides in reading and knowledge.
In order to grow, students need to have quality nonfiction books available for us to read and interact with. These books will also be used as prompts for students to produce an artistic representation of their learning and how they experienced it.
