My students have always been a rich, diverse mix of different cultures, who all come together with one common goal: to learn. Going to school in an urban setting, they come from all manner of backgrounds and walks of life to learn as a community. As a special education teacher, it is imperative that I offer differentiation into the classroom because many of my students are academically years behind.
We hope to have art materials to encourage our alternative ways of learning mathematics for this changing global economy.
It will not do them justice to just give them packets of worksheets to complete. They need directed teacher instruction to help guide them through necessary skills.
My Project
My students are just starting the 8th grade. My goal this year is to incorporate art and math in the classroom especially since half of my students are into art. I want to incorporate art into our area, perimeter, and geometry units. The students will draw diagrams and pictures that represent each word problem and will represent it on the easel board. They will put it on computer paper and I will laminate the ones that are exemplary and hang them around the room for references.
Having these art materials will not only allow them to learn mathematics, it will transform the way our students view their math skills.
In addition, I want to have the students create cartoons and artwork that help represent each topic that we cover this year. This will help all my students but especially my special education students as writing is sometimes not their strong suit.
Last but not least, I want binders to keep all of our artwork together by topic.
