This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My kindergarten students rush in every morning, smiling and chattering, and check the room to see what they will learn that day. They love math, science and art, and are always eager to show off their beginning reading and math skills. What great energy!

98% of our students' families depend upon the free- and reduced-price breakfast and lunch program in order to feed their children.

As most families are English language learners, they must work several, low-wage jobs in order to pay their rent. Some parents work the graveyard shift, so do not sleep until after picking up their children from kindergarten. Many share their apartments with their extended families, and their strong family bond helps support them. I have 3 sets of cousins in my class, and it’s sweet to watch them help each other. My students' families are interested in learning English and ensuring their children succeed in school. One can see that by the way the children are groomed to a shine. The children are very respectful and treasure their learning. Since many do not own toys or books, they go nuts during rainy day recess when I bring out the toys and puzzles I buy at garage sales.

My Project

My school district lost a lot of funding, as well as bulk purchasing discounts, so I am unable to buy anything beyond the basic paper and pencils. In kindergarten, we integrate math, science and art. The kids learn science through paint mixing and diagramming plants, math through measuring paper to cut, and social skills by learning to share art supplies. My students love to draw as well as create 3-D geometric shapes. Recently, they created cubes, pyramids and triangular prisms from toothpicks (edges) and marshmallows (vertices). My kinder monkeys learned far more about geometric shapes than had they filled out a worksheet. Currently, they are learning to draw pictures to solve math problems. Hands-on math develops critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are transferable and life-long. Unfortunately, they require resources that I’ve run out of. The supplies I am requesting are basic, yet critical. Washable paint, glue, alphabet and number stampers, as well as ink pads.

My students brave walking through a questionable neighborhood in order to reach school, and are often here until their parents return from work.

Please help provide my students a strong math and science program. We are all aware of California’s budgetary crisis and the negative impact it has upon our educational system. Your generosity will help educate our future workforce, upon whom we will depend to help put our beautiful state back on track. Thank you for your help.
