The Art of Marine Science: Gyotaku Fish Printing

My Project

Middle school science class is where students bring life experiences and observations and work together to investigate natural phenomena. From this they develop understanding of scientific concepts and discover the relevance and applications of those concepts. Hands-on investigation and creative activities are at the core of this process!

With the requested fish printing supplies based on the traditional Japanese art of gyotaku, my marine science students will combine observations of sea life and art into a creative project.

They will be able to select their favorite from various fish and invertebrate rubber forms. Using paint and brush they will make a print of their specimen, highlighting details such as fins, scales, and body structures. This will tie into previous activities about animal structure, function, and adaptations. As a bonus, 8th graders who have studied the physics of light and color will be able to practice combining pigments on the plates to create colors they desire. We will divide posterboard into two sections: one section where paint will be applied to the form and all around the edges, and the other where the student can press the paper onto the form without the excess paint smearing.

Having a piece of art to take home will further fuel student learning, as they will explain the details of their artwork to family and friends. Experiences like this make learning relevant and personal, fostering awareness of the natural world and creativity of middle schoolers!
