My Students
Help us to promote the art of African drumming. We already have an African dance class at our school and want to form an African drum orchestra so that student drummers (boys and girls) can accompany the student dancers (boys and girls). We have enough funds to purchase half of the drums we need.
Our scholars are inner city middle schoolers.
We are a Title I school. This year we are incorporating arts education into the school day, thanks to a grant we received. Students will have the option to study ballroom dancing, modern dance, drama, visual arts, and African dance. African drumming will be included if we can purchase adequate drums with help from you. Our scholars wear uniforms and recite the school creed daily, along with the pledge of allegiance.
My Project
My students need five Djembe drums and five Djembe bags to add to the ones that are being purchased with money we received to fund an arts program at our school. There are numerous studies that have documented the significance of incorporating arts education into the academic environment. We believe that our students excel socially as well as academically because of their participation in our program. Last year in our pilot African drumming program, the 3 students who participated in the class showed marked improvements in their academic as well as social performance in school. Parents have informed us that they see positive results at home as well. This year we hope to have ten or more boys and girls in the program.
When school closed in June scholars were informed that there will be an African drumming class in the fall.
Many of them expressed excitement and interest in the opportunity to participate. We would like to accommodate as many as possible. The level of excitement about this program enhances the spirit in the school community. We would appreciate your help. Thanks so much.
