The Art of Chemistry

My students need Bisque tiles, glazes, and paint brushes to discover hands-on how increasing the temperature of a substance causes a chemical reaction and a color change.

My Students

Chemistry is everywhere. Whether you are cooking, cleaning, brushing your teeth, or driving to school, chemical reactions are taking place. I want my students to understand they can determine the content of substances by heating them and seeing a color change- evidence of a chemical reaction.

I have 180 Physical Science students with a quest for knowledge.

They are a very diverse group of young teenagers, with varied socioeconomic backgrounds, with interests, aspirations, hopes and dreams. They are amazing with boundless curiosity and wonder of the world around them. They constantly amaze me with their work ethic, creativity and love of learning. Many want to learn more than is required, asking in-depth questions and wanting clarification of exceptions to the "rules" they are learning. We have students of all levels- from advanced to far below basic in English/Language Arts and Math. Through science, we incorporate language math, and ART- helping all kids to be proficient eighth graders.

My Project

I am ordering bisque tiles, paint brushes and glazes, so that students can design tiles based on the elements in the periodic table. They will be able to paint using various glazes - and see that after firing, the glazes change color - signifying a chemical change. When completed, the tiles will be used to make a periodic table.

This project will make a difference in these student's lives by giving them the opportunity to see first-hand a reaction that causes a change in color of a substance.

Students tend to remember things they did, rather than what they were told, and it is my goal to create a memory that will last a lifetime.
