My Project

Pretend play is one of the most effective ways to help children learn in a Pre-K classroom. To help engage and motivate these young learners we try to switch our dramatic play center theme monthly. We also like to change the play concept based on the child's interests, and as you can imagine, they always come up with new ideas. There are many social, emotional, and academic benefits when children actively engage in a dramatic play concept. One of their new ideas was a Bakery!

A pretend bake shop will entice students to use math and literacy skills while engaging in play scenarios with different roles and tasks to carry out.

Transforming our dramatic play into a play bake shop, they wouldn't even notice the secret ingredients of academic skills sprinkled in. They could follow a recipe to bake cookies, measure, and "read" menus. Children will be so absorbed in their play, matching colors when they decorate their desserts, counting how many cookies they need to bake, writing order forms, or adding up the cost that the customer needs to pay.

These materials will allow us to set up the dramatic play center to incorporate different tasks the students can complete. Children will be fully engaged with the materials on our order list by baking, mixing and measuring, decorating, ordering, paying, and packing desserts. Using authentic baking pans, utensils and timers is also super helpful as it allows students to feel like it is real. It is a fantastic place for students to spend their time exploring the materials.
