Help me give my students butterfly larvae and art supplies to explore the art and science of nature.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Horne's classroom raised $600

My Project
Many of our middle school students spend a large portion of every day looking at smartphone and computer screens instead of interacting with the world around them. Our school schedule limits the number of students who may take the art classes offered. The only way for every student to participate in art activities must be through a core subject class.
It would be a wonderful experience for all of our 8th graders to engage in a 4th quarter art project chronicling the life cycles of the painted lady butterfly and hornworm moth!
They already have sketchbooks and insect enclosures, but need the larvae, colored pencils, a sharpener, and rulers to help them precisely record the changes they observe. I look forward to seeing the evolution of their projects as they continually observe, measure, sketch, and discuss with classmates what they notice going on! While the measurements will be precise, their depictions of the larvae, pupae, and butterflies will show personal focus and creative drawing.
I am also requesting shrink plastic and permanent markers for incoming students to learn to carefully observe the nature found on our school campus and build community by creating nature and school themed backpack decorations. We are also hosting a family astronomy night near the end of the school year, so as soon as possible I will have some students experiment using glow in the dark pens to make their own star finder planispheres.
